Over the past two years, headlines are often commenting about the failing economy and how many Americans are being hurt by it. This recession is the worst that people in this country have seen since the Great Depression in the 1930′s and people are trying to figure out how to get by on less. Not only is it the hot trend to be frugal today, but it is imperative for most people. Even the wealthiest people with a nice income have been affected in their companies or the amount of money they lost in their investments. All people have been affected in some capacity. People are attempting to make their money go farther whether it is making less expensive meals for their families or fixing a smaller item like an iPod Touch repair or iPhone repairs rather than replacing them.

There are many ways to save money when times are tough or you have lost your job as many Americans have experienced over the past year. The first thing to look at is the monthly expenses that you have. Obviously, things such as your rent or mortgage have to be paid in addition to other important expenses such as health insurance and food for your family. Look through and eliminate anything that is not an absolute necessity such as beauty items or entertainment costs. A lot of people are surprised how much money they spend on extra items and can usually save quite a bit once they make a real effort to tighten up their budget.

One good tip is to reduce the amount of money spent on food or eating out. Set a goal to try not to eat out or get to go food for an entire month. In order to do this, it takes advanced planning of meals and this may be done weekly for the following week. Due to the economy, there are many websites and things in newspapers and magazines giving recipe suggestions that not only taste good but are inexpensive too. Also, always use coupons or a discount card when you head to the supermarket and only get what is on your list and don’t purchase things out of impulse that are not really needed.

Another way to save on expenses is to buy used items rather than full priced new things. A lot of people are realizing the benefit of this and what great finds you can get at a consignment store for clothing or things for your home. This is particularly true for children’s clothing that is usually outgrown every season. Another helpful suggestion is to swap clothing with a friend that has similar taste and size. This is a great way for you to receive new clothing for no cost at all.

The final way to reduce expenses is to fix things that are broken rather than replacing them with a new item. A lot of people used to only have large ticket items fixed but now they are seeing the value in having even smaller possessions repaired too.
