VoIP Phone Service vs. Regular Phone Service

Welcome back to Phones Directory News! We normally post to this blog daily, so there should be new posts for you to read!

VoIP phone service, also known as voice over internet protocol telephone service, works by hooking your telephone to the internet. Your telephone calls are then sent over the internet as small bits of information, called packets, instead of them being sent over an old fashioned telephone wire. This type of telephone service has the following pros and cons:

VoIP Phone Service Pros:
• There is very little cost.
• Unlimited calling plans usually include all of the US and Canada.
• There are also VoIP plans that include free calling to other, select, countries.
• You can get a phone number with any US area code and prefix.
• Virtual office and PBX accounts can be created, and phone numbers added, to expand any business, at any rate, nationwide.

VoIP Phone Service Cons:
• Internet phone service goes down when your internet goes down.
• 911 doesn’t work on your internet telephone service when your internet service is down.

Landline phone service is where a dedicated line is installed in, or on your house by a telephone company. While cable carriers do install telephone service into homes and offices, they provide what they call “Digital Phone Service”. Digital phone service is just a fancy name for internet telephone service. Landline phone service has the following pros and cons:

Landline Phone Service Pros:
• Landline phone service is technically more stable than internet telephone service.
• Your landline phone number gets put in the phone book, while your internet telephone service phone number doesn’t.
• Landline phone signals, overall, have a better reputation for clarity.
• 911 works automatically without putting in your address.
• You can get regular phone service without having to get internet service.

Landline Phone Service Cons:
• Taxes and fees can easily be over 25% of a landline phone bill.
• Voice-mail, Caller ID and other calling features are each an extra fee.
• Local and long distance phone service, plus an extra line for dial up internet service, cost more than high speed internet service and an unlimited VoIP calling plan.

While trying to be fair with the pros and cons of land-line phone service and internet telephone service, it is getting to the point that the only reason to still have a landline telephone plan is because you either can’t get high speed internet service, or you really, really need to make sure your call quality is superb. But, with most people now using either regular phone service, or cell phones, trying to get the last 2% of call clarity isn’t worth isn’t worth the added cost.
